Why I Love Camping in East Texas in the Fall of the Year
October is my favorite time of year to enjoy nature and the serenity of the colorful forest.
Fall is my favorite time of year and I especially like camping in East Texas.
You can’t beat the fall foliage in the Piney Woods of East Texas and Western Louisiana. I could hardly wait for the summer heat to move on. These warm days and cool nights are heavenly to me.
Much of East Texas is landscaped with tall pine trees, hilly terrain and bayous and black water swamps the closer you get to the Louisiana border. And there’s plenty of wild life to enjoy and observe.
I especially like to watch the crows. I love hearing them squawk. I often wonder what message they are sending out to the universe.
One of my favorite camp spots is called; “Indian Mounds”. It’s located about 11.3 miles from Hemphill, Texas and is managed by the Sabine River Authority. The camping area is very primitive, but it does provide portable toliets and drinking water.
However, if you are equipped with a generator or solar, you will have some power. And this time of year AC is not needed.
Here is a picture of the Sabine River bordering Indian Mounds Camp Site.
The cost is very reasonable to camp here.
Day Use is $2 a day
Camping is $4 a day
Indian Mounds is beautiful this time of year. Outside of bird watching, hiking and boating, I enjoy writing.
Even though, I do sometimes write directly on a laptop, I prefer writing with paper and pen. Technology bothers my “flow state” sometimes.
After years of writing academically, I’m learning the new way of writing online. The change takes practice and willingness to put the old ways behind and go forward.
Consistency is the key to becoming a successful writer online, and understanding “your why” you want to write in the first place.
Author Neera Mahajan explains the “why'“ you should want to write in her Writer’s Toolkit. She mentions, “writing is hard” and you cannot sustain it without a “why”.
So, I questioned my “why” and discovered I wanted to write to make sense of my life and entertain others. I enjoy interacting with other writers here on sub stack and medium.
Why is writing so hard?
Most people claim they can’t find the time to write consistently. That is the key to success on becoming a writer. The more you write the easier it gets. You must get a system down, that fits your lifestyle.
After reading countless articles, on becoming a great writer, you must find your own way. You never get perfect at writing. It’s always an evolving craft based on your skills and passion.
Here is the best advice I’ve found on becoming a writer.
Camping and being in nature sparks my muse and gives me a new energy to write with passion. Places like Indian Mounds and East Texas State Parks are great places to write and enjoy life.
Please comment and I hope you will venture out and enjoy yourself while camping.
Hi Carole. My wife and I are campers too. We live on the Florida Panhandle so I well know the wait through the summertime heat and humidity. We often head up to the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Georgia during those warm months for short stays.
I am just dabbling with SubStack at the moment, wondering if I want to get involved? Writing while we’re camping doesn’t always work for me. My mind gets going in too many directions. I do most of my own writing on my iPad or my MacBook. I jump from one to the other, with my files in the cloud.
This was my first time reading your articles. I’ll subscribe to read more. Take care.
